Political tensions in Karnataka escalated on Friday after senior Congress leader and Minister Ramalinga Reddy resigned from the state Cabinet, citing dissatisfaction over the allocation of the Bengaluru Urban portfolio. The development has triggered a fresh wave of criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which alleged that the Congress government in the state is heading towards instability and could face early elections.
Reddy’s resignation comes amid reports of internal discord within the newly formed Cabinet led by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. In another setback for the ruling party, veteran Congress leader and Minister K.H. Muniyappa also expressed dissatisfaction over his allocated portfolio and said he would not assume charge of the Food and Civil Supplies Department. These developments have intensified speculation about growing friction within the state leadership.
Reacting to the situation, Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra accused the Congress government of being embroiled in infighting and corruption allegations. He claimed that the administration has failed to meet public expectations and suggested that the ongoing internal disputes reflect deeper instability within the ruling party. Vijayendra further asserted that the situation could push the state towards an early election.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress, questioning its commitment to women’s representation in the Cabinet. He alleged that despite making public promises, the party had failed to ensure adequate representation of women in ministerial positions. Other BJP leaders echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Congress leadership of prioritising internal power struggles over governance.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders sought to downplay the crisis. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge clarified that Ramalinga Reddy has not left the party and described his resignation as a temporary issue that would be resolved through internal discussions. He expressed confidence that the senior leadership would intervene to resolve the matter amicably.
Congress MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao also struck a conciliatory tone, noting that political disagreements are not uncommon and expressing hope that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar would address the concerns and restore stability within the Cabinet. As discussions continue within the party, attention remains focused on whether the leadership can contain the unrest and prevent further political fallout.
