Maharashtra Revenue Minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule staunchly defended former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, asserting that it was driven solely by health concerns and condemning speculation about ulterior motives. Dhankhar, 74, stepped down as Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman on Monday, the first day of the Parliament’s monsoon session, citing medical reasons in his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.
The Congress party, led by Jairam Ramesh, fueled controversy by suggesting “far deeper reasons” behind Dhankhar’s exit, pointing to his alleged frustration over Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Kiren Rijiju skipping a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting chaired by Dhankhar hours before his announcement. Nadda clarified that the Vice President’s office was informed of their absence due to prior commitments.
Addressing these claims in Nagpur, Bawankule emphasized Dhankhar’s impeccable reputation, stating, “If someone’s health prevents them from serving justice in their role, they must make such a decision. Dhankhar ji has led a spotless life, and casting suspicions on him is unjust.”
Bawankule also took a swipe at the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, highlighting internal rifts over the selection of the next Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, as the tenure of Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve nears its end in August 2025. “The MVA’s leaders couldn’t even hold a joint press conference on the last day of the session, showing their disunity,” he remarked, pointing to ongoing disputes among Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP).
Dhankhar’s sudden resignation continues to stir political debate, with the BJP standing firm on his stated health reasons while the opposition pushes for deeper scrutiny.
