A major political controversy has erupted in Uttarakhand after Girdhari Lal Sahu, husband of state Women and Child Development Minister Rekha Arya, allegedly made derogatory remarks suggesting that girls from Bihar could be "brought for marriage" for ₹20,000 to ₹25,000. The comments, captured in a viral video from a public event in Almora last month, show Sahu addressing young audience members about marriage, stating, "If you’re unable to get married... we will bring a girl for you from Bihar. There, you get girls for ₹20,000-₹25,000." The statement has drawn widespread condemnation for objectifying women, reinforcing stereotypes about human trafficking and bride-buying, and insulting the dignity of women from Bihar.
The backlash has crossed party lines, with opposition parties like Congress labeling the remarks an "insult to the daughters of India" and demanding accountability from the BJP-led government. In Bihar, the State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognisance, issuing a notice to Sahu and describing his comments as "highly condemnable" and reflective of "mental bankruptcy." Leaders from RJD, JD(U), and even some BJP figures in Bihar have criticized the statement, calling for a formal apology and highlighting its misogynistic nature. Protests have been reported in parts of Bihar, with effigies burnt and demands for action against Sahu, while Uttarakhand Congress leaders have questioned how such views align with the minister's portfolio focused on women and child welfare.
In response to the uproar, Sahu issued an apology via video, claiming his words were twisted and misconstrued by opponents. He clarified that he was referring to a friend's marriage anecdote and had no intention to demean women or any community, adding, "If my words have hurt anyone, I apologize with folded hands." The Uttarakhand BJP unit quickly distanced itself from the controversy, condemning the remarks as "hateful thinking and statements against women" and emphasizing that Sahu holds no official position in the party. The state BJP media in-charge stated there is "no connection" with Sahu, while the central party has remained largely silent on the matter.

The incident has reignited debates on gender sensitivity, regional stereotypes, and the accountability of individuals associated with public figures in politics. As the Bihar State Women’s Commission pursues its notice and opposition parties continue to press for further action, the controversy underscores ongoing challenges in addressing misogynistic language in public discourse.
