The Bharatiya Janata Party in Sikkim has formally demanded immediate implementation of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, insisting that the exercise must be conducted strictly under the protective provisions of Article 371(F) of the Constitution, which safeguards the unique identity and historical rights of the indigenous Sikkimese people.
A high-level BJP delegation led by state functionaries met Gangtok District Election Officer on Tuesday and submitted a detailed representation, reiterating arguments earlier presented to the Chief Electoral Officer. The party emphasised that any revision must fully comply with the Sikkim Citizenship Order Act, 1975, and the Representation of the Sikkim Subject Act, 1974, to prevent dilution of constitutional guarantees granted at the time of Sikkim’s merger with India.
State BJP spokesperson Sangay Gyatso Bhutia stated that the party remains unwavering in its commitment to place “Sikkim and Sikkimese people first,” describing the demand as non-negotiable for preserving the state’s distinct demographic character and cultural heritage. He asserted that failure to conduct the SIR under these specific legal frameworks would undermine the very foundation of Sikkim’s special status.

The BJP sharply criticised other political parties in the state for maintaining silence on the issue, accusing them of prioritising narrow electoral gains over the long-term interests of indigenous communities. Bhutia urged citizens to recognise what he termed “duplicity and theatrics” among rival groups that have refrained from supporting the demand despite its constitutional significance.
With the Election Commission having already ordered SIR in 12 states and Union Territories last month, the BJP has vowed continued vigilance to ensure Sikkim is included and that the process adheres strictly to safeguards designed to protect the rights of original Sikkimese subjects for future generations.
