The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of attempting to destabilise the Narendra Modi-led government through what it described as a “grave conspiracy” aimed at spreading unrest and anarchy in the country. The allegations came after reports claimed that Gandhi, during a meeting of the Congress Minority Department’s advisory council, stated that the Modi government would collapse within a year. The BJP alleged that the remarks reflected a broader political strategy involving opposition parties and external influences seeking to weaken the government.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal strongly criticised Gandhi’s reported comments, saying they revealed a “massive conspiracy” involving the Congress, sections of the opposition alliance, and what he termed a “toolkit gang.” In a post shared on social media platform X, Goyal claimed the opposition was attempting to create instability in the country after repeatedly failing to defeat the BJP electorally. He alleged that the Congress leadership was trying to provoke unrest because Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued to enjoy strong public support across the country.
The BJP leader further accused the Congress and its allies of acting against national interests by allegedly encouraging divisions and unrest. Goyal said the people of India were fully aware of what he described as the “true nature” of opposition politics and claimed voters had consistently rejected such efforts in elections. Referring to the opposition bloc, he asserted that any attempt to “set India on fire” politically would ultimately fail because of public faith in democratic institutions and the Modi government’s development agenda. His remarks were widely circulated online and triggered a fresh political exchange between the ruling party and the opposition.

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra also targeted Gandhi, accusing him of pursuing a strategy designed to dislodge the government through “anarchy” and social unrest. In a video statement, Patra alleged that Gandhi was acting under the influence of foreign interests and repeated previous BJP accusations linking the Congress leader to billionaire investor George Soros. Patra claimed that India’s democratic structure and constitutional framework were strong enough to withstand any such attempts, adding that public support remained firmly behind the Modi administration.
The controversy has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress ahead of several important state elections and future national campaigns. Over recent years, the BJP has repeatedly accused opposition leaders of undermining India’s democratic institutions and attempting to tarnish the country’s global image. The Congress, on the other hand, has consistently criticised the BJP government over issues such as unemployment, inflation, governance, and democratic freedoms. While the latest remarks have triggered strong political reactions, Congress leaders had not issued a detailed official clarification regarding the specific claims made by BJP leaders at the time of reporting.
Political observers note that such verbal confrontations have become increasingly common in India’s highly polarised political environment. Statements made by senior leaders are often amplified through social media platforms and quickly become part of broader political narratives advanced by both sides. Analysts believe the exchange reflects the growing intensity of political messaging as parties seek to consolidate support bases ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Despite the heated rhetoric, experts point out that India’s parliamentary democracy continues to function through institutional checks, electoral processes, and regular public participation in the political system.
