The Congress party is expected to take a final decision soon on the appointment of the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, following internal consultations led by former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. The discussions come during the ongoing first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, where the party is still finalising key leadership roles.
Baghel, who was sent to Guwahati by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), held detailed meetings with all 19 Congress MLAs in the state. According to him, every legislator was given an opportunity to share their views, and a consensus proposal was passed unanimously during the discussions. He said the feedback collected from the MLAs has been compiled and submitted to the party high command for a final decision.
The former Chief Minister also confirmed that he held one-on-one interactions with each MLA to understand their perspectives on leadership within the Assembly. He added that while internal consultations have concluded at the state level, the final authority on the appointment rests with the AICC leadership, which is expected to announce its decision shortly.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi also addressed the media after the meeting, stating that extensive deliberations were held regarding the party’s strategy in the Assembly and its approach to upcoming political challenges. He expressed gratitude to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party general secretary K.C. Venugopal, and Bhupesh Baghel for guiding the process.
Gogoi further said that all Congress MLAs in Assam have expressed full confidence in the party high command and will abide by its decision on leadership roles. He noted that the discussions also focused on how effectively the party can raise public issues in the Assembly and strengthen its opposition role in the state legislature.
According to party leaders, Baghel also advised legislators on maintaining a strong and coordinated approach while addressing key issues affecting Assam in the Assembly. He reportedly emphasised the importance of unity and consistent messaging, while the final decision on the Deputy Leader of the Opposition is expected to be announced after the AICC completes its review.
