Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reaffirmed that the Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections will be carried out strictly and without political pressure. He emphasized that the exercise is aimed at ensuring a clean and accurate voters’ list to protect the democratic process in the state.
Opposition parties, including Congress and Raijor Dal, have accused the BJP of planning to target voters who traditionally avoid voting for the ruling party, alleging potential manipulation of the electoral rolls. Sarma dismissed these claims as “purely baseless” and cautioned against giving undue importance to allegations by Akhil Gogoi or other critics.
Addressing media in Lakhimpur, the CM said Booth Level Agents (BLAs) have been instructed to file objections against any “doubtful” names found during the revision process. “I have openly said this — file complaints against as many doubtful persons as possible,” he noted, stressing that this right is available to all political parties equally.

Sarma underlined the significance of the Special Revision for ensuring genuine voter representation in Assam. “Maintaining accurate electoral rolls is necessary for the future of Assam. There will be no dilution in this process,” he added, asserting that the exercise is about protecting democracy, not political gain.
On the alliance front, Sarma reaffirmed the BJP’s partnership with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He emphasized that the regional party faces no pressure regarding seat-sharing and is free to contest constituencies as it chooses. The BJP will decide the number of seats it will not contest by February 15, with any additional AGP candidates leading to a “friendly contest.”
The CM concluded by reiterating the BJP’s commitment to a transparent electoral process, urging all parties to participate responsibly in the revision exercise. He assured that the government will not tolerate interference and will ensure that the voter list remains a credible tool for Assam’s democratic governance.
