Assam Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the new BJP-led NDA government in the state is likely to have around 18 to 19 ministers, though he clarified that no final decision has yet been taken on the composition of the council of ministers. His remarks come ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the new government scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said that discussions on ministerial appointments are still ongoing and the final list will be prepared only after consultations with BJP National President JP Nadda, who is expected to arrive in Guwahati later in the evening. He stressed that names and portfolios will be finalised only after this meeting, ruling out any immediate confirmation of cabinet members.
Sarma indicated that the size of the council is expected to be around 18 to 19 ministers, but added that the final structure will depend on party leadership guidance. He also noted that the decision will balance both experienced leaders and new faces, depending on organisational requirements and governance priorities.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with several chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and senior NDA leaders are also expected to participate in the event, making it a significant political gathering.
