Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday declared that eliminating illegal infiltration would be the Bharatiya Janata Party’s first task if it forms the government in West Bengal after the 2026 Assembly elections. Shah made the remarks in Kolkata during a press conference, where he is on a three-day visit to the state.
Addressing the media, Shah said the BJP would not only stop illegal infiltration but also take decisive action to remove those already staying illegally in the state. He alleged that the issue has grown beyond a state-level concern and has now become a serious national problem requiring firm intervention.
The Home Minister strongly criticised the Trinamool Congress government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing them of shielding and nurturing infiltrators. He questioned the state government’s resistance to erecting barbed fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, calling it unprecedented and detrimental to national security.

Shah also launched a sharp attack on the ruling party over corruption allegations, citing multiple scandals including chit fund scams, school recruitment irregularities, and coal and cattle smuggling cases. He claimed that several Trinamool Congress leaders and ministers have landed in jail due to corruption, reflecting administrative failure.
Raising concerns over women’s safety, Shah said the situation in West Bengal has deteriorated significantly under the current regime. He referred to incidents at prominent institutions and regions, asserting that women do not feel safe and demanding accountability from the state government.
Highlighting West Bengal’s historical importance to the BJP, Shah recalled that party founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee hailed from the state. Expressing confidence, he said the BJP’s steadily rising popularity since 2016 indicates that the party is well-positioned to win the 2026 Assembly elections and bring what he termed “decisive governance” to the state.
