Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Assam on August 29, 2025, will mark the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) political narrative-building for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi also scheduled to visit within 10 days, the state BJP is mobilizing to ensure the success of these high-profile events, aiming to secure a third consecutive term in power.
On August 29, Shah will inaugurate the newly constructed Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, a significant government event. Later, he will address a convention of recently elected National Democratic Alliance (NDA) panchayat representatives, delivering a keynote speech that Sarma described as a pivotal moment for setting the BJP’s electoral tone. “Shah’s address will initiate our political narrative for the 2026 polls,” Sarma told reporters after a preparatory meeting at the BJP’s state headquarters on Friday. In the evening, Shah will attend the birth centenary celebration of Assam’s first non-Congress Chief Minister, Golap Borbora, further emphasizing the party’s historical connect with the state.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit, beginning September 8, will focus on development projects and cultural tributes. In Golaghat, he will dedicate India’s first bio-ethanol refinery in Numaligarh, built at a cost exceeding Rs 4,000 crore, boosting Assam’s green energy initiatives. In Mangaldai, Modi will lay foundation stones for three major projects: the Guwahati Ring Road, a Brahmaputra river bridge between Narengi and Kuruwa, and the Mangaldai Medical College and Hospital. The day will conclude in Guwahati with the inauguration of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebration, honoring the legendary Assamese artist.

Although most events are government-led, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure their success, leveraging them to strengthen its grassroots support. State BJP president Dilip Saikia, in a post on X, urged party workers, MPs, and MLAs to actively coordinate for the visits. “We are committed to making the Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan and PM Modi’s programs a grand success,” Saikia stated. The party’s efforts come as Assam’s assembly elections, expected in early 2026, draw closer, with the BJP and its allies aiming to consolidate their dominance against a resurgent opposition.
The BJP, in alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), has governed Assam since 2016, with Sarma at the helm since 2021. Shah’s and Modi’s visits are strategically timed to reinforce the party’s achievements in governance, infrastructure, and cultural preservation, while addressing challenges like recent protests over regional issues. The events are expected to galvanize the NDA’s base and set the stage for a robust campaign.
