Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal after the upcoming Assembly elections, the state’s international border with Bangladesh would be fully sealed with barbed fencing within 45 days. He made the remarks while addressing an election rally in Chandipur, East Midnapore district.
Shah alleged that the current Trinamool Congress-led government under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had allowed the border areas to remain open and unfenced, which he claimed had contributed to illegal infiltration into the state. He asserted that tackling infiltration would be a top priority for the BJP, stating that the party aims to “free West Bengal of illegal infiltrators” if voted to power.
In his speech, Shah also criticized the ruling party over issues of corruption, crime, and governance. He accused Trinamool Congress leaders of enabling extortion and corruption, and alleged that public welfare funds, including relief assistance sent during Cyclone Amphan in 2020, were misappropriated. He further claimed that those responsible for such irregularities would be held accountable under a BJP government.

The Home Minister also addressed development-related concerns in the region, promising to revive stalled industrial projects, including a steel plant proposal linked to the Jindal Group in Salboni. He said that industrial growth would be encouraged while ensuring the elimination of what he described as “syndicate raj” and illegal activities such as sand mining from rivers.
Shah reiterated similar themes at another rally in Salboni Assembly constituency earlier in the day, stating that the BJP’s broader goal is to address infiltration concerns not only in West Bengal but across the country. He also alleged that the current administration had failed to ensure safety and development for the people of the state. The remarks come as political campaigning intensifies ahead of the Assembly elections, with both major parties focusing on issues of security, governance, and development to consolidate voter support in West Bengal.
