A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after allegations surfaced of an attempt to destabilise the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Vijay. The dispute intensified after Chennai Police registered a case and arrested three people in connection with an alleged conspiracy to influence legislators. The developments have triggered a sharp exchange of allegations between the ruling TVK and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with both sides accusing each other of political misconduct.
The case stems from a complaint filed by TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja, who alleged that he was offered Rs 35 crore by individuals linked to a consultancy firm in exchange for supporting a move against the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker. Based on the complaint, police arrested three suspects on Wednesday. Investigators are examining claims that the alleged plan involved persuading multiple TVK legislators to resign simultaneously, a move that could have threatened the stability of the state government.
An FIR has also been registered against Ashok, the brother of DMK MLA Senthil Balaji, over allegations that he attempted to bribe the TVK legislator. According to the complaint, Ashok was among those accused of trying to influence elected representatives. Police have launched an investigation into the allegations, though the claims are yet to be tested in court and no judicial findings have been made regarding the accusations.

Reacting strongly to the developments, the TVK accused the DMK of attempting to topple the government through "horse-trading" by allegedly trying to lure away its MLAs. Senior TVK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar claimed that several legislators from the ruling party had been approached over the past 40 days. He alleged that the arrests and the FIR showed the opposition had been "caught red-handed" while attempting to destabilise the government.
The opposition has rejected the allegations, and the political row has drawn in other parties, including the AIADMK, leading to a broader confrontation in the state's political landscape. The controversy has intensified debate over the use of money and political influence in attempts to shift legislative support, with rival parties accusing one another of misusing state institutions and spreading unverified claims for political advantage.
The investigation is continuing, and authorities are expected to examine evidence, including witness statements and other material collected during the probe. The outcome of the police investigation is likely to play a significant role in determining the next course of action. Meanwhile, the allegations have added fresh tension to Tamil Nadu politics, with the ruling party insisting that it remains united and the opposition dismissing the accusations as politically motivated.
