Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has strongly condemned the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in West Bengal, describing the incident as unacceptable and calling for immediate intervention by the Lok Sabha Speaker and the judiciary. His remarks come amid heightened political tensions between opposition parties and the ruling establishment in West Bengal over allegations of deteriorating law and order.
The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday in Nadia district, where Mahua Moitra had travelled to Palashi in Kaliganj to attend a Trinamool Congress (TMC) meeting at the residence of party MLA Alifa Ahmed. According to Moitra’s allegations, a group of protesters gathered outside the venue, raised slogans such as “go back” and “chor,” and allegedly hurled eggs at her during the demonstration. The protest, she claimed, disrupted the event and created a volatile situation outside the meeting venue.
Reacting to the episode, Akhilesh Yadav posted on social media platform X, terming the alleged attack “highly condemnable.” He urged constitutional authorities, including the Lok Sabha Speaker, to take immediate cognisance of the matter and ensure appropriate action. Yadav also shared a video of Mahua Moitra while expressing concern over what he described as an increasing trend of political hostility and violence in the country’s democratic discourse.

In his statement, Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing its power in states where it is in government and creating what he described as a “poisonous atmosphere of political violence.” He alleged that law enforcement agencies were being politicised and deployed selectively, particularly in states governed by rival parties. According to him, such developments undermine democratic norms and weaken public trust in institutions responsible for maintaining order.
Yadav further suggested that the climate of aggression being witnessed in various states is not limited to isolated incidents but reflects a broader pattern of rising political intolerance. He claimed that even some BJP workers and supporters are uncomfortable with such developments, fearing that similar treatment could be meted out to them in states where the political equation differs or where the party may lose power in the future. He added that while senior leaders may remain protected under security arrangements, grassroots workers are more exposed to public anger and political backlash.
Following the incident, Mahua Moitra herself criticised the situation, alleging that the law and order machinery in West Bengal had collapsed. She claimed that the police remained passive during the protest and did not intervene effectively to control the situation. Moitra further alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to target her politically, stating that the individuals involved were affiliated with the BJP and that such incidents reflect a broader breakdown in administrative control.
The episode has intensified political sparring between the ruling TMC and opposition parties, with each side trading accusations over governance and public safety in West Bengal. While the TMC has pointed to alleged targeted intimidation of its leaders, opposition figures have used the incident to raise questions about policing and political accountability in the state. The matter is now drawing wider national attention as calls grow for institutional scrutiny and accountability regarding the alleged attack.
