In a major political shift, AIADMK organizing secretary and former MP Anwar Raja joined the ruling DMK on Monday in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin. The Ramanathapuram strongman, a prominent minority face of the AIADMK, was expelled from the party shortly after his defection, following his vocal criticism of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami’s decision to revive electoral ties with the BJP.
Addressing the media, Raja accused the BJP of undermining Tamil Nadu’s interests, including state autonomy and language rights. “The BJP aims to weaken AIADMK before targeting DMK,” he said, noting Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s failure to endorse Palaniswami as the NDA’s chief ministerial candidate for 2026. Raja expressed confidence in Stalin’s leadership to counter these threats. His move, a blow to AIADMK’s minority support base, signals growing discontent within the party over its BJP alliance.
