Abhishek Banerjee, Member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress, has been named in a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with alleged provocative remarks made during the recent election campaign in West Bengal, police said on Friday. The complaint, filed by social worker Rajiv Sarkar on May 5, alleges that Banerjee delivered inflammatory speeches between April 27 and May 3 at multiple campaign events, with the intent of inciting enmity and disturbing public order.
The FIR also refers to a statement attributed to Banerjee in which he allegedly questioned who would “save them” and referred to a “godfather from Delhi” in a remark directed at political opponents.According to the complaint, the speech allegedly included indirect references perceived as threats toward Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The FIR has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to inciting riots, spreading hatred between groups, issuing threats, and disseminating false statements that could disrupt public harmony.Police officials stated that the allegations stem from campaign speeches made at several locations during the election period. Investigators will now examine video recordings, witness statements, and other available evidence as part of the probe into whether the remarks violated election conduct rules or criminal provisions under the law.

The case comes amid a politically charged atmosphere in West Bengal following the election cycle, where allegations of post-poll violence and political clashes have already triggered judicial scrutiny. On a separate day prior to the FIR, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior Trinamool leaders appeared before the Calcutta High Court in connection with petitions alleging large-scale violence and attacks on party offices.
The Calcutta High Court has directed the state government to maintain strict law and order and ensure the safety of affected individuals, while also seeking detailed affidavits on the allegations. The court proceedings remain ongoing as both political and legal scrutiny continues over the post-election situation in the state.
