A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Mumbai’s Naya Nagar area for allegedly attacking two security guards after questioning them about their religion, police sources said on Tuesday. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday near an under-construction building located behind Wockhardt Hospital, causing alarm in the neighbourhood.
According to investigators, the accused, identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari, allegedly confronted the guards and asked them to recite the Kalma, the foundational declaration of faith in Islam. Police sources said the two guards were then attacked with a sharp weapon during the confrontation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and witness accounts to establish the exact sequence of events.
The injured guards were identified as Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen. Both reportedly sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said Mishra managed to reach the hospital on his own despite his wounds, while Sen required assistance after the attack.

A local resident, Nayab Sheikh, is said to have helped Sen after finding him bleeding and hiding inside the guards’ booth. Sheikh, who was returning home from work, reportedly took the injured man first to the police station and then ensured he received medical attention. Police said the timely intervention helped in the immediate response to the incident.
Ansari has since been taken into custody, and a case has been registered. Sources also claimed the accused had lived in the United States for several years before returning to India. Police are investigating the motive, mental state of the accused and any prior background connected to the attack. Further legal action is expected based on the findings of the probe.
