The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has launched a significant recruitment drive to fill 35,726 teaching positions in state-run secondary and higher secondary schools, as announced on September 5, 2025. The notification, now available on the official WBSSC website (westbengalssc.com), includes 12,514 posts for classes 11-12 and 23,212 for classes 9-10, catering to a wide range of subjects and mediums.
This recruitment adheres to the state government’s reservation policy, reserving 17% of vacancies for Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates, alongside opportunities for general category applicants. The move follows a Supreme Court stay on a Calcutta High Court order that had previously blocked West Bengal’s revised OBC reservation policy, clearing the path for this large-scale hiring initiative.
This recruitment comes in the wake of a turbulent period for West Bengal’s education sector, marked by the Supreme Court’s April 2025 decision to annul nearly 26,000 teaching appointments from the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) due to irregularities. The ruling led to widespread protests, with affected teachers demanding reinstatement and clarity on eligibility.
The WBSSC’s latest notification addresses these concerns by offering a fresh opportunity for qualified candidates, including those unaffected by the 2016 irregularities, who may continue serving until December 31, 2025. The recruitment process, guided by the updated Recruitment Rules, 2025, emphasizes transparency, with merit panels to be prepared based on written tests, oral interviews, and lecture demonstrations, ensuring a fair selection process.
Eligible candidates, aged 21 to 40 years (with relaxations of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, and 8 years for physically handicapped candidates), can apply online from June 16 to July 14, 2025, via westbengalssc.com. The application process involves selecting class levels, subjects, and mediums, uploading required documents, and paying the application fee. The written examination is scheduled for early September 2025, with results to be published on the WBSSC website.
This initiative, prompted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement and the Supreme Court’s directive to initiate recruitment by May 31, aims to bolster West Bengal’s education system while addressing long-standing legal and administrative challenges.
