Communal clashes broke out in Tripura's Unakoti district on Saturday after a dispute over collecting subscriptions for a local community fair escalated into widespread violence. The confrontation, initially sparked by demands made to a timber-laden vehicle in Saidarpar village under Fatikroy police station limits, quickly turned communal, resulting in arson, vandalism, and significant property damage. Several houses were set ablaze, and places of worship from both communities were targeted during the unrest.
The violence intensified in the Shimultala area when a family reportedly refused to contribute to the fair subscription, prompting a mob to gather and set fire to properties, including a timber shop. Retaliatory attacks followed, leading to further incidents of arson and destruction. Police sources confirmed that at least five to six individuals sustained injuries during the clashes, while multiple homes and commercial establishments suffered severe damage.
In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Tripura government swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, across the affected area. A large contingent of security forces, including central forces, was deployed, and flag marches were conducted to restore calm. Authorities also suspended mobile internet services in the Kumarghat Sub-Division for 48 hours as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of inflammatory messages.

At least eight persons have been taken into custody in connection with the violence, according to police sources. The arrests form part of ongoing efforts to identify and detain those responsible for inciting the clashes and carrying out acts of arson and vandalism. Officials stated that the situation is now under control following the rapid deployment of forces and the enforcement of strict preventive measures.
The incident highlights the fragile nature of communal harmony in the region and the potential for seemingly minor disputes to escalate rapidly. Authorities continue to maintain a heavy security presence in the area while urging both communities to exercise restraint. Investigations into the sequence of events and the role of various groups remain underway to ensure lasting peace in the Kumarghat Sub-Division.
