Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, resuming his role as Rajya Sabha Chairman on Monday, expressed heartfelt gratitude to leaders across party lines who inquired about his health following his recent hospitalization for cardiac issues.
Among those who reached out were Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alongside Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.
Dhankhar, admitted to AIIMS on March 9 and discharged on March 12, shared his appreciation in the Rajya Sabha, noting how the bipartisan concern “greatly touched” him and aided his recovery. “Sonia Gandhi contacted my wife, as did chief ministers from several states, including West Bengal,” he said, with Gandhi present in the House.
He highlighted Nadda and Kharge as the first to connect with his family, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in the hospital. “Hardly anyone didn’t show concern,” he added, calling it an “enlightenment” that transcended political divides.
Recounting a lighter moment, Dhankhar shared how TMC’s Derek O’Brien, during a birthday call last week, quipped, “Shut up and take rest,” reflecting the warmth amid his recuperation. Monday marked his return to chairing proceedings, prompting Nadda and Kharge to wish him well. Kharge, surprised by Dhankhar’s swift return, lauded his dedication, expecting him to rest longer.
The outpouring of support underscored a rare unity in a polarized political landscape, with Dhankhar viewing it as a “source of inspiration.” As he resumes duties, the Vice President’s health scare has momentarily bridged partisan gaps, spotlighting a shared humanity among India’s leaders.
