Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said the Veligonda irrigation project would usher in prosperity for Markapuram and surrounding regions, describing it as a transformative initiative aimed at boosting agriculture and rural livelihoods.
Addressing a public gathering in Markapuram, Naidu said the long-pending project would provide assured irrigation water to drought-prone areas of Prakasam district and neighbouring regions. He stated that once fully operational, the project would help stabilise farm incomes, increase crop productivity and reduce dependence on erratic rainfall. The chief minister emphasised that irrigation infrastructure remains central to the state’s development strategy.
The Veligonda Project, officially known as the Poola Subbaiah Veligonda Project, is designed to draw floodwaters from the Krishna River basin through tunnels and canals to irrigate lakhs of acres of agricultural land. Officials said the project also aims to provide drinking water to several habitations in the region, addressing chronic water scarcity issues that have historically affected farmers and rural communities.

Naidu noted that successive delays had slowed the project’s completion in the past, but his government was committed to accelerating remaining works and ensuring transparent execution. He directed officials to maintain strict timelines and monitor progress closely. According to the state administration, additional budgetary allocations have been earmarked to expedite construction and related infrastructure.
The chief minister expressed confidence that the Veligonda project would catalyse economic growth in Markapuram by strengthening agriculture, generating employment and encouraging allied sectors such as agro-processing. As water availability improves, he said, the region is expected to witness enhanced investment and improved living standards, reinforcing the government’s focus on infrastructure-led rural development.
