Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday that the ₹462-crore redevelopment of Chandigarh railway station will include a landmark roof plaza designed to directly connect the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides of the station, dramatically improving intercity movement for commuters. Speaking to the media during an on-site inspection, Vaishnaw described the elevated plaza as a key feature that will allow seamless pedestrian transit between the two cities, eliminating the need for passengers to exit and re-enter through separate entrances. “Work is progressing very quickly,” the minister said, highlighting the project’s innovative modular construction using prefabricated components to accelerate timelines.
The minister, accompanied by Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma, reviewed the ongoing modernization work. The revamped station is being developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with a focus on enhanced passenger amenities, accessibility, and integration with Chandigarh’s planned architectural aesthetic. The roof plaza is expected to serve as both a functional bridge and an aesthetic centerpiece, creating a unified travel hub for the tricity area.
Earlier in the day, Vaishnaw conducted a window-trailing inspection of the New Delhi–Chandigarh rail section, reviewing the condition of critical infrastructure, including signals, relays, points, turnouts, and crossings. The Chandigarh station project is part of a nationwide drive to upgrade 1,300-plus stations, with the local redevelopment positioned as a model for multimodal connectivity in rapidly growing urban clusters.

While the minister emphasized the transformative potential of the roof plaza and overall upgrade, he declined to comment when questioned about the severely dilapidated condition of the adjacent Government Railway Police station and residential quarters, redirecting attention to the broader redevelopment vision. Officials confirmed that the station is on track for phased completion, with the roof plaza and enhanced connectivity features expected to significantly ease daily travel between Chandigarh and Panchkula once operational.
