Eleven schools from Uttar Pradesh have secured places in the national rankings under the Government of India's Swachh and Green School Rating (SGSR) 2025-26 programme, highlighting the state's efforts to promote cleanliness, environmental sustainability and student-friendly campus practices. The selected institutions represent government schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), central schools and a private school, reflecting broad participation across different categories.
Government schools accounted for the largest share of Uttar Pradesh's representation in the national rankings. Among the institutions recognised are PM Shri Primary School Italia Mafi in Sambhal, which secured the 12th rank, Primary School Chokhapur in Pilibhit at 25th, PMV Kanya Ganchhapa in Chitrakoot at 27th and Primary School Sahajani in Bareilly at 29th. Their performance highlights the growing emphasis on maintaining clean and environmentally conscious learning spaces.
A total of 20 top-performing schools from Uttar Pradesh were nominated for national-level evaluation, with 11 ultimately earning a place in the rankings. The recognition is based on multiple parameters, including sanitation facilities, waste management, water conservation, greenery, hygiene practices and the overall quality of the learning environment provided to students.

The Swachh and Green School Rating programme aims to encourage educational institutions to adopt sustainable practices while creating healthier campuses for children. Schools are assessed on their ability to integrate environmental awareness with daily operations, ensuring that students actively participate in initiatives related to cleanliness, recycling and resource conservation.
The inclusion of government schools, KGBVs, central schools and a private institution demonstrates that schools across different management systems are making progress in improving campus infrastructure and sustainability standards. The initiative also aligns with broader national efforts to promote environmental responsibility and enhance public education facilities.
Officials believe that the recognition will motivate more schools to adopt green practices and invest in better sanitation and environmental management systems. The success of Uttar Pradesh's institutions in the national rankings is expected to encourage healthy competition among schools while reinforcing the importance of cleanliness, sustainability and student well-being as essential components of quality education.
