Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday announced that Bhadohi district will now be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi, restoring the name associated with the revered saint Sant Ravidas. The announcement was made during the chief minister's visit to the district, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 112 development projects with a combined value of more than Rs 1,340 crore. Addressing the gathering, Adityanath said the district would henceforth be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. He said the decision reflected the government's earlier announcement made on the occasion of Guru Purnima that the district, which is widely known for its carpet industry, would be named after Sant Ravidas.
The chief minister described the saint as a spiritual figure whose teachings helped promote social unity and emphasised the importance of ensuring that the benefits of welfare measures reach people across society. Adityanath also linked the renaming with the teachings and social vision associated with Sant Ravidas. He said the saint had envisioned a society in which no one remained hungry and people benefited from welfare measures. Referring to government welfare programmes, the chief minister said that more than 80 crore people across India are currently receiving free ration under schemes implemented under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
He said it was therefore appropriate for the district to carry the name of Sant Ravidas. The announcement comes against the backdrop of Bhadohi's long administrative history and its significance as a major centre of India's carpet industry. Bhadohi was earlier part of Varanasi district before being separated and established as the state's 65th district on June 30, 1994. Since then, the district's official name has changed more than once, reflecting political and administrative decisions taken by successive state governments. The district was previously known as Sant Ravidas Nagar-Bhadohi before the name was changed back to Bhadohi by the Samajwadi Party government led by then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The change was officially carried out on December 6, 2014. The latest announcement by Adityanath therefore marks another shift in the district's official nomenclature, bringing Sant Ravidas' name back into the identity of the district. During his visit, Adityanath also highlighted the development projects being undertaken in the district. The 112 projects inaugurated or launched during the programme have a combined value of more than Rs 1,340 crore. The projects form part of the government's broader development activities in the region, although the announcement on the district's name remained the central focus of the programme.
The renaming also adds another chapter to Bhadohi's administrative history, with the district now set to be identified as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. The district's association with the carpet industry remains an important part of its economic identity, while the government has emphasised Sant Ravidas' social and spiritual legacy as the basis for the renewed name. The latest announcement follows years of changes to the district's official nomenclature and formally restores the Sant Ravidas reference that had been removed in 2014.
