The Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up for a massive tree plantation drive along the banks of major rivers as part of Van Mahotsav 2025, targeting 3.5 crore saplings to enhance environmental sustainability, according to a state government announcement on Monday. The initiative, spearheaded by the UP Forest Department, will span a 5-km stretch on both sides of rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Ken, Betwa, Rapti, Son, Ramganga, Chhoti Gandak, Chambal, and Hindon.
The campaign, covering 23,772.45 hectares, aims to boost green cover, curb pollution, conserve soil, and promote groundwater recharge while supporting Chief Minister Yogi Ad0680ityanath’s River Rejuvenation Programme. The Yamuna will lead with 9,678,330 saplings, followed by the Ganga (5,480,994) and Betwa (5,061,251). On July 9, the state plans to plant a staggering 37 crore saplings in a single day, with Adityanath urging citizens to join the “Plant Trees, Save Lives” movement.
The drive prioritizes fruit-bearing and medicinal trees, such as neem and mango, to enhance farmers’ income while stabilizing riverbanks to prevent floods and landslides. By anchoring soil with tree roots, the initiative aims to ensure smoother river flow and combat erosion, marking a significant step toward sustainable development in Uttar Pradesh.
