The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions surpassed a monumental 20 billion in volume for August, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital payment revolution. The total transaction value reached ₹24.85 lakh crore, slightly down from July’s ₹25.08 lakh crore but a robust 21% increase from ₹20.60 lakh crore in August 2024. In volume terms, the 20.01 billion transactions reflect a 34% surge compared to 14.9 billion in the same month last year, outpacing July 2025’s record of 19.47 billion.
The average daily transaction count in August stood at 645 million, with a daily value of ₹80,177 crore, underscoring UPI’s dominance in India’s payment ecosystem. “Crossing 20.01 billion transactions is a testament to the resilience of India’s digital economy,” said Dilip Modi, CEO of Spice Money. “From urban centers to rural Bharat, UPI is becoming a way of life for millions, driving a 34% growth surge.” UPI now accounts for 85% of India’s digital transactions and nearly 50% of global real-time digital payments, cementing its position as a global leader.
UPI’s international footprint continues to expand, with seamless transactions now available in seven countries: the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. Its entry into France marks a historic step as the first European nation to adopt UPI, enabling Indian travelers and residents to make hassle-free payments abroad. This global expansion highlights UPI’s role in transforming cross-border transactions, reducing dependency on traditional foreign exchange systems.
