On July 9, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government announced stringent measures to combat fertiliser overpricing and black marketing, ensuring farmers’ access to essential inputs during the Kharif season. A dedicated helpline, 0522-2209650, has been activated for reporting violations, with authorities directed to take immediate action against offenders.
The state has secured ample fertiliser stocks, distributing 32,700 metric tonnes of urea and 6,566 metric tonnes of DAP on July 8 alone. Currently, 14.59 lakh metric tonnes of urea and 5.63 lakh metric tonnes of phosphatic fertilisers are available at district warehouses and retail centres, according to a government statement. Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi emphasized that sufficient supplies are in place to meet farmers’ needs, urging them to avoid hoarding for crops like potatoes and mustard.
The government’s proactive stance follows reports of irregularities, with inspections in Lucknow and Sitapur leading to shop closures and licence suspensions for non-compliance. The initiative supports the state’s agricultural targets, with paddy transplantation completed on 30.95 lakh hectares (48% of the 65 lakh hectare goal) and sowing of maize, pulses, oilseeds, and millets progressing steadily.
