Two minor girls, Somvati Ahirwar (16) and Durga Ahirwar (12), tragically lost their lives after falling into an abandoned, waterlogged borewell in Hiloundha village, Nagaud tehsil, on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 5 pm while the girls were in a field where their family was sowing paddy, police reported.
The borewell, obscured by water accumulation and missing its casing, went unnoticed by the girls, leading to their fatal fall, said Nagaud police station in-charge Ashok Pandey. The family alerted authorities, prompting a swift response from Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jitendra Verma and police forces. The State Disaster Emergency Response Force deployed divers, but darkness and waterlogging complicated the rescue efforts.
Somvati’s body was recovered around 9:30 pm on Sunday, followed by Durga’s at 12:15 am on Monday. Both bodies were sent to Nagaud government hospital for post-mortem examinations. The incident highlights the ongoing danger of abandoned borewells, with local authorities now facing scrutiny over safety measures.
