A picnic at the popular Aabadi spot, dubbed ‘Mini Goa,’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district turned tragic on Friday when 22-year-old Bhanu drowned in the Kanhar River, and 19-year-old Sneha went missing, police said.
The group, including four daughters of Obra resident Dinanath Tyagi and their neighbor Bhanu, was bathing around 5:30 PM when a sudden surge in water levels and strong currents swept the two away, according to Chopan police station’s SHO Vijay Kumar Chaurasia.
Despite extensive search efforts by local authorities and divers, Bhanu’s body was recovered hours later, while Sneha remains missing. The incident, reported at 4 PM IST, underscores the dangers of unpredictable river conditions at popular picnic spots.
Aabadi, known for its scenic beauty, has seen similar tragedies, with a 32-year-old drowning in the Kanhar in May 2025. Police continue their search for Sneha, urging caution at riverine recreational sites.
