Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday expressed gratitude to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh after the Ministry of Defence approved the state government’s Gandhi Sarovar Project, which will be developed on defence land at Bapu Ghat as part of the larger Musi River rejuvenation initiative.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister thanked the Defence Minister, the Ministry of Defence, and the Indian Army for granting permission to carry out development work on the site. He described the approval as a significant milestone in Telangana’s vision to transform the Musi riverfront into a vibrant ecological, cultural, and public space for citizens.
According to official communication, the Ministry of Defence has allowed the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDC) to develop approximately 83.814 acres of defence land at the Artillery Centre in Golconda. The land, valued at around ₹533.42 crore, will be used for the Gandhi Sarovar Project under an arrangement based on the principle of Equal Value Infrastructure (EVI) in exchange for the transferred defence land.

The state government has planned to convert Bapu Ghat into a world-class educational, cultural, spiritual, and environmental landmark dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. Officials said the project holds special historical significance, as the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed at the confluence of the Esa and Musi rivers in February 1948, making it a site of national importance.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has previously held discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding the project and had urged him to participate in the foundation stone-laying ceremony. He had also requested the transfer of a larger 98.20-acre parcel of defence land for the initiative, which forms a key part of the broader Musi River Rejuvenation Project aimed at ecological restoration and urban redevelopment.
The government said the project reflects its commitment to sustainable development and heritage conservation, positioning the Musi riverfront as a major cultural and environmental destination. Officials added that the development is expected to enhance public access to the riverfront while preserving the historical and spiritual significance of the Bapu Ghat area.
