Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin unveiled the state’s groundbreaking Tamil Nadu State Education Policy for School Education on Friday, positioning it as a direct counter to the Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP). Launched at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, the policy rejects what Stalin described as the NEP’s imposition of Hindi and its perceived threat to social justice, emphasizing Tamil Nadu’s commitment to equitable and inclusive education.
The new policy, crafted by a 14-member expert panel led by retired Delhi High Court Chief Justice D Murugesan, introduces significant reforms, including the elimination of public exams for Class XI to reduce academic stress. Tamil Nadu becomes the first state to roll out its own education framework, prioritizing local needs and cultural values over the Centre’s one-size-fits-all approach.
Stalin highlighted that the policy aims to foster holistic education while preserving Tamil Nadu’s linguistic and social identity. The initiative has sparked widespread discussion, with supporters praising its focus on student welfare and critics viewing it as a political move against the central government. The policy is expected to reshape Tamil Nadu’s education landscape, setting a precedent for other states.
