Suvendu Adhikari is set to take an oath as the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, marking a major political shift in the state after the BJP’s sweeping victory in the Assembly elections. The swearing-in ceremony is being held at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, a venue long associated with major political rallies and mass mobilisations in Bengal.
The ceremony is being administered by the governor and attended by several top BJP leaders, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, and BJP national leadership along with chief ministers from BJP-ruled states. Political observers view the event as one of the BJP’s most significant political milestones in eastern India, with the party projecting the occasion as the beginning of a new political chapter for West Bengal after years of Trinamool Congress rule.
The BJP secured a decisive mandate in the Assembly elections, winning 207 out of 293 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats. The results marked a dramatic reversal in the state’s political landscape and effectively ended the long dominance of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had led West Bengal politics for over a decade and a half.

Suvendu Adhikari’s political rise has been one of the defining stories of the election. Once considered a close associate within the Trinamool Congress, Adhikari switched to the BJP ahead of the elections and emerged as one of the party’s strongest campaign faces in Bengal. He contested from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur and defeated Mamata Banerjee in her traditional stronghold by a reported margin of more than 15,000 votes, further strengthening his position within the BJP leadership.
The BJP leadership chose May 9, celebrated as Rabindra Jayanti, for the oath-taking ceremony. Analysts believe the selection was intended to send a cultural and symbolic message to Bengali voters by linking the event with the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. The ceremony’s scale and location have also been viewed as an attempt by the BJP to establish a strong emotional and political connection with the state.
Adhikari was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislative party during a meeting of newly elected MLAs, with senior leaders stating that no alternative name was proposed for the post. As he assumes office, attention is expected to shift toward cabinet formation, administrative priorities, and the BJP’s plans for governance in a state that has witnessed intense political competition and ideological polarisation in recent years.
