The Supreme Court will hear the Maharashtra government’s plea on July 24, challenging the Bombay High Court’s acquittal of all 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train bomb blasts, which killed over 180 people. A bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, alongside Justices K. Vinod Chandran and N.V. Anjaria, scheduled the urgent hearing after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized its critical nature, noting that eight of the acquitted have already been released.
The Bombay High Court, on July 21, overturned the 2015 MCOCA court’s convictions—five death sentences and seven life imprisonments—citing the prosecution’s failure to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The July 11, 2006, attacks saw seven bombs detonate in first-class train compartments, injuring over 800. The state argues the verdict undermines justice, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis calling it “very shocking.”
