The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre, seeking a response to a plea by former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy, who urged the government to expeditiously decide on declaring 'Ram Setu' a national monument. Known as Adam’s Bridge, Ram Setu is a chain of limestone shoals stretching between Pamban Island off Tamil Nadu’s southeastern coast and Mannar Island off Sri Lanka’s northwestern coast. The bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, scheduled the matter for a hearing in four weeks, signaling the court’s intent to ensure progress on this culturally significant issue.
Swamy’s plea references a January 19, 2023, Supreme Court order, where the Centre had informed the court that the Ministry of Culture was actively considering the declaration of Ram Setu as a national heritage monument. At the time, the court permitted Swamy to submit additional materials within two weeks and directed the government to make a decision. However, Swamy’s latest plea highlights that no decision or response has been communicated to him or the court since then, prompting renewed legal action.
The plea underscores the cultural and spiritual importance of Ram Setu, describing it as a man-made archaeological site revered as a pilgrimage destination by millions. It argues that scientific findings and archaeological studies substantiate its historical significance, reinforcing its status as a symbol of faith and devotion. The Centre, Swamy contends, is obligated to protect Ram Setu from misuse, pollution, or desecration, given its deep-rooted religious and cultural value.

Following the 2023 order, Swamy submitted a representation to the government on January 27, 2023, accompanied by supporting documents. He followed up with another representation on May 13, 2025, pressing for action. The plea now seeks a court directive to compel the Ministry of Culture to resolve the matter in a time-bound manner, in line with the 2023 order. This development reignites the debate over Ram Setu’s preservation, balancing its heritage status with its profound spiritual significance for countless devotees across India.
