The Supreme Court on Friday declined to halt trial court proceedings against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) land-for-jobs scam case. Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh directed the Delhi High Court to fast-track Yadav’s plea to quash the CBI’s FIR, while granting him an exemption from personal appearances in the trial court.
The case involves allegations of Group D appointments in the Indian Railways’ West Central Zone in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, during Yadav’s tenure as Railway Minister (2004–2009), purportedly in exchange for land parcels transferred to his family or associates. The CBI filed an FIR in May 2022, naming Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and daughter Misa Bharti among others.
On May 29, 2025, the Delhi High Court found no grounds to stay the proceedings and scheduled Yadav’s quashing plea for August 12. The Supreme Court’s refusal to intervene keeps the legal pressure on Yadav as the case progresses.
