The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to a plea challenging specific provisions of the 2024 amended Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the state, seeking its response, and tagged the plea for hearing alongside similar petitions.
The plea, filed by Lucknow-based academician Roop Rekha Verma and others, argues that certain provisions of the amended law are "vague and overly broad," infringing upon the rights to free speech and religious propagation. The petitioners contend that the law’s ambiguity poses significant concerns for individual freedoms.
