Tarn Taran’s Sarpanch, Jarnail Singh, was shot dead on Sunday during a wedding function at the Marigold Resort in Amritsar, raising serious concerns about law and order in Punjab. Police said two unidentified assailants fired twice at Singh, hitting him in the head, and he died instantly at the venue. CCTV footage is being examined to trace the attackers, while investigations continue using both human intelligence and technical surveillance.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly condemned the killing, criticising the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government for failing to ensure public safety. He highlighted a growing pattern of targeted killings in public spaces, recalling recent murders in Moga and Kapurthala, and blamed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, for the breakdown of law enforcement.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagjit Singh Walia confirmed that Jarnail Singh was affiliated with the AAP and was serving as the Sarpanch of Valtoha village. Singh had come to Amritsar specifically to attend the wedding when the attack occurred. Police teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information and began a detailed probe into the incident.

Authorities are also investigating whether Singh had received any threats or ransom demands prior to the attack. While Tarn Taran police may have additional details on potential warnings, the Amritsar police have reported no such information as yet. Senior officers are coordinating across jurisdictions to ensure the culprits are apprehended promptly.
The killing has sparked renewed debates over the safety of public figures and the effectiveness of policing in Punjab, especially ahead of upcoming elections. Political parties have intensified their criticism of the AAP government, calling for stricter measures to prevent such violent incidents in public spaces.
As the investigation unfolds, Punjab residents and officials are awaiting further updates from law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, political leaders like Sukhbir Badal have demanded accountability and immediate action to restore public confidence in the state’s security apparatus.
