B. Sudershan Reddy, the INDIA bloc’s nominee for India’s vice-presidential election, arrived in Hyderabad to a warm reception from Congress MPs and party leaders at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The 79-year-old former Supreme Court judge, known for his distinguished judicial career and commitment to constitutional values, is intensifying his campaign ahead of the September 9 election.
Reddy, who hails from Telangana, is set to address a press conference in the city on September 1 to outline his vision and appeal for cross-party support, emphasizing a merit-based candidacy over partisan politics.
Reddy’s visit to Hyderabad follows a series of strategic engagements with key opposition leaders across India, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. His recent stop in Ranchi on August 30 saw him meet Jharkhand’s Congress and JMM leaders, where he reiterated his call for MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to back his candidacy based on his judicial record and commitment to social justice.
Reddy has positioned the election as an “ideological battle,” contrasting his liberal constitutional stance with the NDA’s nominee, C.P. Radhakrishnan, a former BJP leader with RSS roots.
As a Telangana native and former head of the state’s 2024 caste survey expert panel, Reddy leverages his regional ties to appeal to local sentiments, making his candidacy a point of pride for the Telugu-speaking states. His campaign emphasizes the vice-presidential election’s secret ballot system, which he argues allows MPs to vote based on conscience without party whips.
Reddy has expressed openness to engaging with BJP leaders to discuss his candidacy, aiming for a “decent and fair” election. With the nomination filing deadline passed on August 21 and the election fast approaching, Reddy’s Hyderabad visit underscores his efforts to consolidate support in his home state while projecting a national appeal for constitutional integrity.
