Torrential rain inundated parts of Tokyo on Thursday, flooding streets and disrupting air and rail services, with authorities warning of continued storms. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) of rain falling in just one hour, overwhelming drainage systems and causing widespread power outages affecting over 7,000 homes, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
The deluge halted operations at Haneda Airport, where lightning strikes grounded flights by disrupting air traffic control and ground services. Major rail services, including the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, were suspended between Tokyo and Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, stranding commuters. Social media reports also noted hail in some areas, exacerbating travel challenges.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued heavy rain and thunderstorm advisories, urging residents to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and monitor updates as more storms are expected overnight. The agency warned of potential landslides and further flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in the Kanto region.
