A devastating accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area, when a speeding Mahindra Thar SUV struck him while he cycled to buy samosas near the Indian Oil petrol pump. The Class 8 student from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, a resident of RK Puram, was hit from behind with such force that he was thrown off his bicycle. The driver fled the scene, leaving the grievously injured boy to be rushed to a nearby hospital by locals, where he was tragically declared dead on arrival.
The Delhi Police, under the Vasant Kunj North station, have launched a thorough investigation, registering a case against the unidentified driver under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Preliminary findings indicate the Thar was driven recklessly on the right side of the road, a stretch notorious for speeding vehicles. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel said CCTV footage from the area is being analyzed to identify the vehicle and its driver, with multiple teams deployed to apprehend the suspect.
The incident has sparked outrage among Vasant Kunj residents, who have long raised concerns about the lack of traffic regulation on the road near the petrol pump. Locals describe the stretch as a hotspot for speeding SUVs, endangering pedestrians and cyclists daily. Community members are now demanding speed breakers, enhanced patrolling, and stricter enforcement of traffic rules to prevent further tragedies, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the capital.
