The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an early onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala this year, predicting its arrival around May 26, with a model uncertainty of plus or minus four days. This places the likely window for the monsoon’s arrival between May 22 and May 30, signaling a potentially earlier-than-usual start to India’s annual rainfall season.
According to an IMD statement issued on Friday, May 15, the southwest monsoon is “likely to set in over Kerala on 26th May with a model error of ± 4 days.” The development is being closely watched as the monsoon plays a crucial role in India’s agriculture, water supply, and overall economy, with rainfall patterns directly influencing crop sowing and rural livelihoods across the country.
Traditionally, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1 before advancing northwards to cover the rest of India over several weeks. Its progression marks the official beginning of the country’s four-month rainy season, which typically lasts from June through September. An earlier or delayed onset can significantly impact agricultural planning, especially for kharif crops that depend heavily on timely rains.

The forecast also suggests a slightly earlier arrival compared to recent years. In 2025, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, while this year’s projection indicates a similar or marginally earlier onset depending on atmospheric conditions in the coming days. Meteorologists note that such variations are not unusual, as monsoon timing is influenced by complex oceanic and atmospheric patterns across the Indian Ocean region.
The IMD’s update is expected to prompt preparations among farmers and state administrations, particularly in regions dependent on rain-fed agriculture. While an early monsoon can benefit sowing activity, experts caution that distribution and intensity of rainfall are equally important in determining its overall impact. The department will continue to refine its forecasts as conditions evolve in the lead-up to the onset date.
