Southern Railway plans to add three new platforms at Coimbatore North railway station to reduce congestion at Coimbatore Junction, General Manager U. Subba Rao said on Friday, October 23. The proposed infrastructure expansion includes an island platform and is intended to improve the handling of railway traffic by shifting some operational activity away from the busy Junction station.
According to Subba Rao, the three platforms would be developed by relocating the goods shed at Coimbatore North station to Thudiyalur station. The relocation would create space for the additional infrastructure and support efforts to ease congestion at Coimbatore Junction, an important railway hub serving the city and surrounding areas.
The proposed development is expected to strengthen Coimbatore North station's capacity to handle train operations. The addition of an island platform, which allows trains to be accessed from both sides, would form part of the planned expansion. The project is aimed at improving the distribution of railway traffic between stations and reducing pressure on existing facilities at Coimbatore Junction.

Subba Rao shared the plan while speaking to mediapersons during an inspection of Coimbatore Junction station on Friday. Salem Divisional Railway Manager Panna Lal was also present during the inspection. The visit provided an opportunity for railway officials to review station operations and discuss measures to address infrastructure requirements in the region.
The proposal forms part of efforts to improve railway facilities in Coimbatore, where easing congestion at the main Junction station is a key operational objective. Shifting the goods shed would be a necessary step in creating the space required for the additional platforms at Coimbatore North. However, the available report did not specify the project's estimated cost, construction timeline or expected completion date.
Once implemented, the plan is intended to provide additional railway infrastructure and help decongest Coimbatore Junction. The extent of the improvement will depend on the execution of the proposed works and how train operations are redistributed between the stations. Southern Railway has outlined the proposed changes, but further details about implementation and scheduling were not provided in the report.
