Congress Leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi late Monday night after experiencing respiratory discomfort. Hospital authorities confirmed that the 79-year-old leader was brought in around 10 pm and is currently stable, responding well to treatment under close medical supervision.
Hospital Chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop said a detailed medical evaluation revealed that Sonia Gandhi’s bronchial asthma had been mildly aggravated. The exacerbation was attributed to the combined effects of cold weather and high air pollution levels prevailing in the national capital, prompting doctors to recommend precautionary hospitalisation.
Dr Swaroop stated that while the condition was not severe, admission was advised to ensure proper monitoring and timely medical management. He added that she is being treated with antibiotics and supportive medication, and her vital parameters are being regularly assessed by the medical team.

Hospital sources noted that Sonia Gandhi has a history of chronic cough and routinely undergoes medical check-ups, particularly during periods of high pollution. Officials described the admission as routine and precautionary, indicating that a decision on discharge would depend on her clinical progress and could be taken within a day or two.
Party sources said the senior Congress leader had been actively engaged in organisational and parliamentary work in recent weeks, attending several key events in Delhi. The hospital’s update has reassured party leaders and supporters, with officials emphasising that her health condition is stable and there is no cause for immediate concern.
