The wife of climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has approached the Delhi High Court seeking an urgent hearing, alleging that his continued stay at Safdarjung Hospital amounts to "illegal detention." Gitanjali Angmo has requested permission to shift Wangchuk to a private medical facility, citing concerns over transparency in his treatment and his deteriorating health after weeks of hunger strike. She has also sought access for his legal team and doctors who had previously been involved in his care.
Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Safdarjung Hospital following a police action on the 21st day of his hunger strike. His wife said he continued the hunger strike even after being admitted and alleged that the hospital had not provided complete details about his medical condition. The hospital later stated that Wangchuk was stable, showing signs of dehydration, and that he had declined certain medical interventions.
Angmo has accused Safdarjung Hospital authorities of withholding specific medical information from public updates, particularly regarding Wangchuk’s potassium levels. She claimed that the hospital described his potassium level as a serious concern but did not disclose the exact figure in official bulletins. She also stated that an independent laboratory report showed a different reading and alleged that repeated requests to discharge or transfer him were not accepted.

Describing the situation as a violation of his rights, Angmo said she had approached the Delhi High Court to seek permission for shifting Wangchuk to another medical facility before his condition worsens. She also alleged restrictions on movement inside the hospital premises, claiming that a large police presence had been deployed around the area where Wangchuk was admitted. Authorities have not announced any change in his hospital status following the allegations.
Wangchuk has been on hunger strike since June 28 as part of a protest linked to demands for reforms in the education system and greater accountability. The latest demonstration was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and raised concerns over issues including an alleged NEET paper leak. With Wangchuk remaining in hospital, Angmo said she would represent him in a planned march to Parliament during the Monsoon Session. In a handwritten note from the hospital, Wangchuk urged supporters to make the march successful and referred to it as the country’s "second freedom movement."
