The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg, who drowned while swimming near a yacht in Singapore on September 19, has received the crucial viscera report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi. SIT chief and Special Director General of Police (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta announced the development, stating that the report has been forwarded to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for examination by a constituted committee.
The committee will analyze the viscera samples—collected during a second autopsy at GMCH following an initial one in Singapore—and submit the final post-mortem report to the SIT. “We will then submit it to the court and provide a copy to Garg’s family,” Gupta told reporters. The findings could shed light on allegations of foul play, including poisoning claims made by Garg’s bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who accused manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta of the singer’s murder.
Currently in SIT custody are Goswami, Sharma, Mahanta, Garg’s DSP cousin Sandipan Garg, personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, and singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta, arrested in connection with the case. Gupta urged patience, emphasizing, “We have to wait until we receive the final post-mortem report” before drawing conclusions.

The investigation faces hurdles in Singapore, with the SIT criticized for not traveling there. Gupta clarified that international probes must adhere to the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between India and Singapore. “We cannot conduct an investigation without their approval; it would be illegal,” he said. An MLAT request for CCTV footage and witness statements was promptly sent via the Ministry of Home Affairs and is under review by Singapore’s Attorney General’s office, the nodal agency. The SIT remains in constant touch with the Indian High Commission in Singapore.
Additionally, notices have been issued to 11 Singapore-based Assamese individuals present on the yacht during Garg’s final moments, with only Rupkamal Kalit cooperating so far. Gupta affirmed that steps are underway to secure the deposition of the remaining 10 NRIs, expressing hope for their imminent participation. As the probe intensifies, the viscera report could unlock vital clues in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the beloved singer’s untimely demise.
