Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah fiercely criticized the BJP for spreading "misinformation" about an alleged urea shortage in the state, pointing the finger at the BJP-led central government for failing to supply adequate fertilizers. Speaking at a mega convention in Maddur, Mandya district, where development projects worth over Rs 1,146 crore were launched, Siddaramaiah urged BJP leaders to secure fertilizer supplies from Union Minister J P Nadda instead of staging protests.
The CM revealed that Karnataka required 6,80,655 MT of urea, but the Centre supplied only 5,16,959 MT, despite his written requests for more due to increased sowing triggered by an early monsoon. He accused the BJP of politicizing the issue, recalling the deaths of two farmers during protests under former BJP CM B S Yediyurappa’s tenure. Siddaramaiah also noted fertilizer shortages in BJP-ruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, emphasizing that the Centre, not the state, is responsible for supply.
Dismissing the BJP Kisan Morcha’s week-long protests alleging an "artificial shortage" due to state mismanagement, Siddaramaiah challenged state BJP President B Y Vijayendra and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy to ensure fertilizer deliveries. He also predicted a Congress victory in the 2028 Assembly polls, touting his government’s achievements, including restarting the Mandya Sugar Factory and implementing five guarantee schemes costing Rs 55,000 crore annually. These schemes, he said, have boosted per capita income and empowered women, reinforcing Karnataka’s position as India’s leader in per capita income.
