Fire at a plastic articles manufacturing unit near KR Market in Bengaluru claimed five lives, including a family of four, leading to the arrest of the building owner, Balakrishnayya Shetty, and his son, Sandeep Shetty, on Sunday, police confirmed.
The blaze, which ignited around 2:30 AM on Saturday in the ground-floor warehouse, rapidly engulfed the multi-story building due to the absence of adequate fire safety measures. While most occupants escaped, one family and their neighbor were trapped, succumbing to the flames. The victims were identified as Madan Singh (38), his wife Sangeetha (33), their children Mithesh (7) and Vihaan (5), and neighbor Suresh Kumar (26).
Madan Singh, originally from Rajasthan, had rented the building for nearly a decade, operating a small-scale unit producing plastic kitchen items, mats, and steel utensils. The family resided on the top floor, unaware of the looming danger below.

Police investigations revealed unauthorized construction and gross negligence in fire safety protocols, prompting Halasuru Gate Police to file charges against the Shettys. The father-son duo was taken into custody for questioning as authorities probe the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been fueled by flammable materials stored in the warehouse, exacerbated by poor ventilation and lack of fire exits. Local residents described thick smoke and intense heat, which hindered rescue efforts. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, but the rapid spread left little chance for those trapped inside.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in small-scale industrial units. Community members gathered near the site, mourning the loss of the Singh family, known for their quiet, hardworking nature.
Authorities are now inspecting similar facilities across Bengaluru to prevent future tragedies. The arrests mark a step toward accountability, but for the victims’ loved ones, the loss is irreparable. The case is under active investigation, with police promising stringent action against those responsible.
