In a notable moment in Maharashtra politics, two members of the influential Pawar family are poised to enter the Rajya Sabha, India’s Upper House of Parliament, but from different political camps and at very different stages of their political journeys. Veteran leader Sharad Pawar, 85, is expected to secure another term in the Rajya Sabha, while Parth Pawar, representing a younger generation, is preparing to begin his first term in the Upper House.
Sharad Pawar’s renomination comes after protracted negotiations within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) opposition alliance, comprising the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), Congress, and Shiv Sena (UBT). The coalition finally united to back the former Union minister for the lone Rajya Sabha seat it is projected to win in the March 16 elections. Congress’s endorsement and Shiv Sena’s concurrence signalled a broader alliance consensus behind the veteran leader’s candidature.
Pawar has had a long and distinguished political career spanning several decades, holding positions at the state and national levels. Originally indicating intentions to gradually step back from active parliamentary politics, the veteran’s decision to seek another term is seen by supporters as a stabilising move for his party amid leadership uncertainties following the death of his nephew Ajit Pawar earlier this year.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Parth Pawar, son of the late Ajit Pawar and part of the Nationalist Congress Party faction aligned with the Mahayuti coalition, is likely to file his nomination for a different Rajya Sabha seat. His expected entry into the Upper House marks a generational shift and a strategic effort by his faction to maintain the Pawar family’s political relevance within the ruling alliance.
The contrasting paths of the two Pawars highlight the fragmented nature of Maharashtra’s current political landscape, in which alliances have shifted and family ties intersect with broader party strategies. As legislative assembly members prepare to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections next month, both Pawars’ ascents reflect the continuing importance of dynastic influence in Indian politics — even as their affiliations diverge.
For Sharad Pawar, the new term would reinforce his enduring role as a statesman on the national stage, while for Parth Pawar, the expected debut marks a significant step in his political career and the next chapter in the Pawar family’s complex legacy.
