The death toll in the Bargi Dam cruise boat tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district has risen to seven, officials confirmed on Friday, as search and rescue operations continued for passengers still missing after the vessel capsized during a sudden storm on Thursday evening. The incident has triggered a large-scale multi-agency response involving the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
The accident occurred when a cruise boat carrying 29 passengers and two crew members overturned in the Bargi Dam reservoir after being caught in strong winds and rough waters. According to officials, the weather conditions deteriorated rapidly, causing turbulence in the reservoir that destabilised the vessel. While 16 passengers have been rescued so far, several others remain unaccounted for, with rescue teams continuing overnight search operations.
Rescue efforts have been intensified with the deployment of specialised equipment, including hydraulic cranes, to recover the overturned boat from the water. Authorities said divers and emergency personnel are systematically scanning the reservoir area to locate missing individuals. The coordinated operation is being monitored closely by district and state-level disaster management officials as time-sensitive efforts continue to recover survivors.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that strong winds and choppy waters developed suddenly, prompting panic among passengers onboard. Several reportedly urged the crew to return to shore as conditions worsened. However, communication challenges and rapidly changing weather conditions meant the vessel drifted further into unstable waters before capsizing. Locals in the vicinity managed to rescue a few passengers who were wearing life jackets by throwing ropes into the water.
Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi said that a full investigation would be conducted once rescue operations are completed. He added that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence or violations of safety protocols. Officials have indicated that the inquiry will examine operational procedures, weather warnings, and compliance with boating safety regulations.
Public Works Department Minister Rakesh Singh confirmed that search operations are continuing without interruption and that authorities are prioritising the recovery of missing passengers. He noted that the overturned vessel is being carefully lifted from the reservoir to assist in further investigation. As rescue efforts continue, the tragedy has raised fresh concerns over tourist safety standards and emergency preparedness at popular water recreation sites in the region.
