Bank branches across India will observe holidays on select days in September 2026 due to regional festivals, state-specific occasions, elections and regular weekend closures. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday schedule, banks may remain closed for up to 14 days during the month, although the exact number of holidays varies from one state to another. Customers planning branch visits should check the holiday applicable to their location before making travel plans.
The RBI's September holiday calendar includes Janmashtami on September 4, elections in the jurisdiction of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation on September 11 and the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva on September 12. September 14 will see closures in some regions for Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesh Puja, Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata, Vinayakar Chathurthi and Hartalika. These holidays are based on regional observances and therefore do not apply uniformly across the country.
Other holidays listed by the RBI during the month include Samvatsari, Nuakhai and the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 15. September 21 will be observed for the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva and Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi, while Karma Puja falls on September 22. Birthday observances for Maharaja Hari Singh Ji are scheduled for September 23, followed by Indrajatra on September 25.

In addition to these regional holidays, banks will remain closed on Sundays on September 6, 13, 20 and 27 across the country. Weekend closures and regional holidays can overlap in some locations, meaning the number of working days lost to bank holidays will differ between states. Customers should therefore refer to the RBI calendar or check with their local branch for the applicable dates.
Physical bank branches may be closed on these holidays, but most digital banking services will continue to operate. Internet banking and mobile banking applications are generally available around the clock, while electronic payment systems such as UPI, IMPS and NEFT can continue processing transactions. This allows customers to carry out many routine banking activities without visiting a branch.
ATMs and cash deposit machines are also expected to remain operational during bank holidays, although cash availability at individual machines can vary depending on local replenishment schedules. Customers who need services that require a physical branch, such as certain paperwork, account-related requests or in-person assistance, should plan their visits around the applicable holiday schedule.
