Vazhoor Soman, a towering figure in Kerala’s political sphere and a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI), served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Peerumade in Idukki district, a role he fulfilled with unwavering dedication until his untimely death at 72. Known for his deep connection to the working class and his advocacy for the marginalized communities of Idukki, Soman was a stalwart in the CPI, contributing significantly to the party’s influence in the state.
Soman's decades-long career was marked by a commitment to social justice and grassroots activism, earning him respect across political lines. Representing the hilly constituency of Peerumade, he championed issues like fair land distribution and workers’ rights, leaving an indelible mark on Kerala’s socio-political fabric.
On August 21, 2025, tragedy struck when Soman suffered a fatal cardiac arrest shortly after attending a revenue assembly meeting in Idukki district. According to Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan, the incident occurred in the afternoon at PTP Nagar, where Soman collapsed while descending the steps of a building, overcome by a sudden heart attack.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital with urgency, medical efforts to revive him proved futile, and he was pronounced dead, sending shockwaves through the state’s political community. The abruptness of his passing, in the midst of his active service, underscored the fragility of life and left his colleagues and constituents grappling with grief.
In the wake of Soman’s death, tributes poured in from across Kerala, reflecting the profound loss felt by both the CPI and the public. Party sources announced that his body would be brought to the CPI state headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, where party workers, leaders, and citizens could pay their last respects before it is transported to Peerumade for final rites.
The somber mood in the state capital and Idukki highlighted Soman’s widespread influence and the affection he commanded. As Kerala mourns, his legacy as a relentless advocate for the underprivileged endures, with calls from party members and supporters to honor his contributions through continued commitment to his ideals. The void left by Soman’s departure will be deeply felt in the Assembly and beyond.
